My first customer was the ex-flatmate of a friend from approx 8 years ago. She sent work my way (through her business) for the first two years that I was freelancing (so in a way she was my 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc) and working with her was a great start to my business...but I was missing out on the best part of my job: interacting with the amazing people that I was building websites for.
It wasn't until I was brave enough to go out on my own and began to be the 'face' of my own work that my business really exploded. Once I was able to make that person connection with my clients the work really came flowing through the door.
