Tom Fox, DevOps Consulting

How I got my first 3 customers and the steps for you to do the same.

Tom Fox

DevOps Consulting

I had taken a break from work in search of some personal time. When it came time to figure out what was next I was confronted with a choice. Either I drop my couple of small side gig type consulting customers and take a "real job" again, or go all-in and try to grow my consulting business.

To fill my schedule a bit and to pay rent I backfilled with some contract work for a larger established do-it-all IT consulting firm. This allowed me to worry less, and focus more. The first few clients grew into bigger clients. Word of mouth led to a couple more. I scaled back my consulting for the outside firm. I started narrowing the technical focus and charging more for my own time, while offloading the more general work to another person. In time that other person became 3 other people and I had reached a size that made for a very comfortable lifestyle business.

The Tip

To whet your beak

Don't undervalue what you can provide your customers. Big things come in small packages. Treat people fairly, even if it feels too expensive. Always ask how you can help, you never know what opportunity awaits you!
